Labour Standards
Your employer is required to pay you overtime once you’ve worked more than 48 hours in a week.
A week is defined as one, consistent, seven-day period. For most jobs, overtime pay is 1.5 times the employee’s regular wages. For example, if you worked 54 hours in one week at $20 per hour your employer must pay you for 48 hours at $20, then 6 hours at “time and a half” or $30.
Nova Scotia has one of highest overtime requirements in the country. For example, in BC employees start earning overtime after 40 hours of work per week.
Some jobs are not subject to overtime rules, such as car and real estate salespeople, and farm workers. For issues related to overtime exemptions, please reach out to the WAC directly.
