This guide is intended for non-unionized, provincially regulated employees in Nova Scotia. It provides a general overview of laws which govern most employment relationships in the province. It is not intended to substitute advice from a legal professional.
If you fall into one of these categories, the content of this guide may not apply to you:
Federally regulated employees
Unionized employees
Independent contractors
The next chapters have more information on identifying whether or not you are one of these employees, and details about the different classes of employment.
Some provincial workers are also exempted from the entire- or sections-of the Labour Standards Code. These commonly include domestic workers employed in private homes for less than 24 hrs/week (e.g. babysitters or house cleaners), certain sales roles (e.g. real estate agents), farm workers, or athletes. The full list of these workers and which sections do or do not apply is outlined in Section 2(1) of the Labour Standards Regulations.
